TERRAPIN TRANS-(IN)FORMER
August 1994 Volume 1, Number 1
THE TRANSFER CREDIT CENTER, a joint effort between the Office of Records and Registration and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, is designed to improve the transfer credit process for advisors and students alike. The Center will accomplish this goal by compiling a data bank of transfer course equivalencies and by providing detailed information to newly-admitted students. The Transfer Center is a function rather than a location; we are here to serve advisors, current students, and prospective students.
GREETINGS!
I take this opportunity to introduce myself in my new capacity as Coordinator of the Transfer Center; many of you have known me in one of my former positions, working for the English Department or Student Affairs Office in Arts and Humanities. I am excited to be a part of an operation that so many of us have desired for so long, and I look forward to working with you all again as we seek to make the transition to College Park easier for our transfer students. Some of you also know Mary Bell, who worked with the pilot program for the Center; she is now the Transfer Credit Evaluator. In addition, Sean McCluskie, a graduate assistant (working toward his Ph.D. in Government), will be providing technical support for the Center.
At present, I expect that our newsletter will be published 2-3 times per semester to inform advisors of any significant changes in course transferability. In addition, it will give the latest statistics available on the equivalency data bank, and information about any upcoming modifications to computer access to these equivalencies. There are plans to publish the newsletter on-line (in UMCP’s InforM) and compile an index according to the issues featured in each edition. If any of you have suggestions as to how the Center can better serve you, please do not hesitate to call or E-mail me. I look forward to solving some of our transfer problems together.

TRANSFER CREDIT CENTER SERVICES
The Center specifically supports students and staff by
Being responsible for the posting of transfer credit evaluations
Gathering syllabi or section-specific descriptions from other schools
Providing copies of course descriptions presently on micro fiche (upon request)
Updating and correcting equivalency tables for institutions (The ADVISE system will reflect those changes on individual students' ADVISE records the following day).
Interfacing with the CORE Committee to complete the Maryland Community College coding project (to identify and post equivalencies for general education requirements in MDCCs).
Resolving questions regarding transfer articulation for CORE credit
TRANSFER CREDIT EVALUATION PROCESS
The success of the Center depends on the cooperation of colleges and departments. The chart below helps illustrate the exchange of information between the Transfer Center and academic advising units.

Academic Departments |
The Transfer Credit Center coordinates the flow of information between advisors and students.
It generates a report listing courses that need evaluating and gathers and sends course
descriptions to the appropriate academic departments. Departments receive descriptions,
produce evaluations, and return them to the Center for entry into SIS/ADVISE.
Here are some tips you might use when requesting individual evaluations:
Include the student's name and social-security number
If known, provide the sending institution's course title and course I.D. (some equivalencies are time-specific).
Notify the Center by campus mail, telephone, or E-mail, rather than referring students to the Center
