How to read the transfer credit database:
From left to right, the columns of data you will see in the database are Course at Sending Institution,
UMCP Equivalent Course, USP, CORE, Diversity, Elective, Acceptability, Course Title, Footnotes, and
Start/End Terms.
The USP and CORE columns represent U of M general education programs. USP is the old program; CORE is
the new. Virtually all new students (admitted after 1990) to U of M should pay attention only to the
CORE column. Both columns will contain codes if that particular class fulfills a specific general
education requirement at U of M. To see what requirement the class you're looking at fulfills, simply
click one of the blue 2-character codes and you'll be taken to a "key" which explains it further. For
more information on CORE, visit http://www.inform.umd.edu/EdRes/UgradInfo/GeneralEducation/
for details.
The Diversity column indicates if the class also satisfies U of M's diversity requirement (1
class, which can be combined with other requirements.)
The Elective column just shows if the class is generally acceptable. Basically, if the class is
acceptable and does not have a direct equivalent at U of M (e.g. ENGL101) and is not usable for CORE,
it will usually display either an "L1" or "L2" code. L1=lower level elective; L2=upper level elective.
Acceptability - "Y"es, "N"o, or "X" values. "X" means that the class will transfer ONLY if you are a
new student to U of M. (This is due to special articulation agreements we have with other schools within
the State of Maryland.) You may NOT take an "X" course for credit if you are currently a U of M student. This is basically because it is a less-than-ideal version of what we would normally require you to have in order to get credit here.
Course Title - This is self explanatory.
Footnoes - Do pay attention to these if these exist next to your course. Click on the blue link they
provide to get details on what they are saying.
Start/End Terms - Lastly, definitely pay careful attention to the Start & End Terms on your
courses if any exist there in the database. The terms (if applicable) are there to indicate any CHANGES
in content for that course that have forced U of M to re-evaluate what the course comes in as. If used,
these columns will be populated with a 4 digit number representing the 2-digit year and 2-digit month
that change occurred. For example, a number like "0008" would mean, "Year 2000, August." "0201", in
turn, would mean "Year 2002, January." The months will always end in either "01, 05, 07, 08, or 12"
corresponding with U of M's Spring, Summer I, Summer II, Fall, and Winter session semesters respectively.
So, for example, if you took a class in Fall 2000 that says you're getting "HIST156" at U of M, but also
has an End Term of 9908 beside it, you'll know that that particular line is saying that "HIST156" is OK
for this class only up until 9908. As always, feel free to call TCC at (301) 314-8240 or 8385 if you
still have questions.
